Amsterdam Parking Rates 2026: Fees Hike by 15% in West & Oost

Amsterdam Parking Rates 2026: Fees to Hike by 15% in West & Oost

Amsterdam – Driving into the Dutch capital is about to become even more of a luxury. In a decisive vote late last night, the Amsterdam City Council (Gemeenteraad) approved a controversial proposal to increase on-street parking fees by a staggering 15% in the districts of Nieuw-West, West, and Oost.

While the historic City Center (Centrum) has long been one of the most expensive places to park in the world, this new measure aggressively targets the “ring” neighborhoods where many expats and families live. The hike, set to take effect in the second half of 2026, is part of the city’s broader “Autoluw” (low-car) agenda aimed at reclaiming streets for cyclists and pedestrians.

If you own a car in the city or plan to visit friends in De Baarsjes or Indische Buurt, here is the full breakdown of what this price shock means for your wallet.

The New Hourly Rates: Breaking the €7 Barrier

For years, there was a sharp drop in price once you crossed the canal belt out of the center. That gap is closing.

Currently, parking in the Center costs €7.50 to €10.00 per hour. The districts of West and Oost were hovering around €5.00 to €6.00. With the new 15% hike plus inflation adjustments, the hourly rate in these residential zones is projected to break the €7.50 per hour mark.

Nieuw-West / Zuid€4.50 – €5.00€5.20 – €5.75Moderate Hike

Affected Areas: Is Your Street on the List?

The term “West” and “Oost” is broad. To be specific, this hike targets the increasingly gentrified neighborhoods that border the center. The city argues these areas effectively function as part of the extended city center.

Amsterdam West

  • Oud-West: Overtoom, Kinkerstraat, De Hallen area.
  • Westerpark: Including the Spaarndammerbuurt.
  • De Baarsjes: Specifically the areas closer to the Rembrandtpark.

Amsterdam Oost

  • Oosterparkbuurt: All streets surrounding the park.
  • Dapperbuurt: The Dappermarkt area.
  • Indische Buurt: Specifically the Javastraat area.
  • Weesperzijde: The popular strip along the Amstel river.

Resident Permits: Waiting Lists & Cost Increases

If you live in these areas, you rely on a Resident Parking Permit (Parkeervergunning). The news for residents is equally grim.

While the 15% hike primarily targets hourly street parking (visitors), permit fees are also being indexed. More importantly, the city is actively reducing the number of permits issued.

  • Waiting Lists: In Oud-West and De Pijp, the waiting list for a permit is currently 6 to 12 months. In Oost, it is approaching 4 months.
  • Second Car Ban: It is becoming nearly impossible to get a permit for a second car in the same household. The cost for a second permit is usually 2.5x the price of the first one.

The Smart Alternative: P+R (Park and Ride)

If you have visitors coming to Amsterdam, or if you live there and don’t use your car daily, you simply cannot afford to park on the street anymore. 5 hours of parking in West will now cost you nearly €40.00.

The solution is the P+R System. If you park at the ring and take public transport into the city, parking costs as little as €6.00 for 24 hours (off-peak).

Top P+R Locations for West & Oost:

  • P+R Bos en Lommer: Best for visiting Amsterdam West. Tram 7 or 19 takes you straight in.
  • P+R Zeeburg: Best for visiting Amsterdam Oost. Tram 26 gets you to the center in minutes.
  • P+R RAI: Best for Zuid and De Pijp.

Crucial Rule: To get the cheap rate, you must use your OV-chipkaart (or GVB app ticket) to travel to the city center and back. You must scan your parking ticket and your OV card at the machine when paying.

Warning: Paid Parking on Sundays is Expanding

A common trap for expats is assuming Sunday parking is free. In 2026, this is almost nowhere the case inside the A10 ring.

The city has expanded “Paid Parking” hours. In most of West and Oost, you now pay until midnight, including Sundays. Always check the parking machine or your parking app (Yellowbrick/Parkmobile) before walking away.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When does the 15% increase start?

The vote has passed, but implementation usually takes a few months to update machines and apps. Expect the new rates to hit by Summer 2026.

Can I use Parkmobile or EasyPark?

Yes, all major apps work in Amsterdam. In fact, they are recommended because they charge you by the minute, so you don’t overpay if you leave early. Just remember these apps charge a small transaction fee (approx €0.39) per session.

Are electric cars exempt?

No. Electric cars pay the same parking fees as petrol cars in Amsterdam. However, owners of electric cars usually get priority on the waiting list for resident permits.
