De or het? Learn Dutch articles with games

Three short game lessons on the Dutch articles: everyday nouns, things in your home, food and drink. Every word has audio and its article in colour.

De or het? Every Dutch noun takes de or het (โ€œtheโ€). Only a few rules always work, for example: words ending in -je are always het. So learn every noun together with its article. (Taaladvies.net)

How to remember de or het

No quick trick works for every word, so the most reliable way is to learn each noun with its article from the start: not just huis, but het huis.

Say the article out loud every time you hear a noun in the lessons. The games read every word with its article, so de fiets and het huis become one sound in your memory.

Use colour: in these lessons de words are blue and het words are orange. Many learners find it easier to picture the colour than to recall a rule.

And remember the one rule that always works: words ending in -je take het, like het meisje and het broodje. Then practise with the de or het game at the end of each lesson until you answer without thinking.
