IND appointment: you book appointments with the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) online at ind.nl, and only after the IND has sent you a letter or message asking you to come. You use an appointment to give your biometrics (photo, signature and fingerprints), to collect your residence document, or to get a residence endorsement sticker or return visa. IND desks and service points only see people with an appointment. This guide explains each step, where to go and what to bring.

1. Which IND appointments can you book online?
On its “Make an appointment” page the IND lists these appointment types:
- Collect a document: when the IND tells you that your residence permit, original document, statelessness document (S-document) or EU registration card is ready.
- Biometrics: when the IND writes that it needs your photo, signature and fingerprints for your residence document.
- Residence endorsement sticker: proof that you may await your procedure in the Netherlands.
- Return visa: if you temporarily do not have a valid residence permit and need a return visa to come back to the Netherlands.
- Ukraine: proof of residency for people from Ukraine.
- Family reunification registration: registering a family member who is travelling to the Netherlands.
For anything else, the IND asks you to call: 088 043 04 30 (from abroad +31 88 043 04 30), Monday to Friday 09:00โ17:00. Keep your V-number or case number ready.
2. How to book an IND appointment, step by step
- Wait for the IND letter or message. It tells you what the IND needs: biometrics, or that your document is ready to collect.
- Go to ind.nl โ Make an appointment with the IND and choose the type of appointment that matches your letter.
- Choose a location and a time. Pick a desk or service point that offers the service you need (see section 5).
- Save the confirmation email. It contains your appointment code, which you must bring, and a link to cancel.
- Bring the right documents on the day (see sections 3 and 4).
3. Biometrics appointment: photo, signature and fingerprints
The IND needs your photo, signature and/or fingerprints to make your residence document. You can book a biometrics appointment after you have submitted your application and received a letter of receipt, or a letter saying the IND needs your biometrics.
Bring:
- your valid passport or other travel document;
- the appointment code from your confirmation email;
- if you have one: your (expired) Dutch residence permit or Foreign Nationals Identity Document;
- if your document was lost or stolen: the police report.
Children: children aged 2 and over come to the appointment. The parent brings their own valid passport or residence document and the child’s valid passport, or a (copy of the) birth certificate. For children under 2 you do not make an appointment: you send a passport photo taken by a photographer, using the IND’s Appendix Passport photo form.
Cost: giving biometrics is free. If you choose an expat centre, you may have to pay an (additional) fee.
Locations for biometrics: Amsterdam, Den Haag, Haarlem, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Zwolle, Enschede, Utrecht, Goes, Maastricht and Nijmegen.
4. Collecting your residence document
The IND aims to have your residence document ready within 2 weeks after taking your biometrics. You get a message when it is ready, and then you book an appointment to collect it.
- Collect it yourself: you cannot send someone else.
- Children under 18 collect their document together with a parent or legal representative.
- Bring: your valid passport or travel document, your appointment code and, if you have one, your (expired) residence document or Foreign Nationals Identity Document; a police report if it was lost or stolen.
- Unpaid fee? If you still have to pay the application fee, you pay the full amount at the IND desk or service point.
- Where: Amsterdam, Den Haag, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Zwolle, Goes, Maastricht or Nijmegen, depending on what your letter says.
