Schiphol Airport Guide 2026: 7 Essential Tips for Security, Trains and Delays

SCHIPHOL – October 8, 2026 | The Dutch Daily

Schiphol Airport guide: for anyone living in the Netherlands, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the gateway to home visits, holidays and business trips. A smooth trip starts before you leave the house. This guide covers when to arrive, how to get through security faster with a free timeslot, how to get to and from Schiphol by train and bus, and your rights if your flight is delayed or cancelled, based on Schiphol’s own advice and the EU rules.

Schiphol Airport guide: quick answer

  • When to arrive: follow your airline’s advice. Schiphol says arriving long before check-in opens is pointless.
  • Security: book a free 15-minute security timeslot, from 3 days before your flight.
  • Liquids: containers of max. 100 ml. Laptops and liquids can stay in your bag.
  • To Amsterdam Centraal: train in 14–17 minutes, 8 times an hour. Pay with a contactless card.
  • Delay of 3+ hours at arrival: €250–€600 compensation under EU rules, unless there were extraordinary circumstances.

1. How early should you be at Schiphol Airport?

There is no single answer, and Schiphol itself warns against arriving far too early. Its advice:

  • Check your airline’s advice for what time to arrive at Schiphol. Arriving an hour earlier than that often just means waiting, because the airline has not opened its check-in desks yet and you cannot drop off your baggage. It can also lead to crowding in the departure hall.
  • Check your travel day before you set off. Schiphol’s website shows how busy the airport is and any roadworks or disruptions around the airport. Coming by train? Check the NS website for planned works.
  • Use the Schiphol app. It shows your flight status, which departure hall you need, when you can check in and where to drop your baggage. With notifications on, it tells you when to go to the gate and when boarding starts.

2. Getting through Schiphol Airport security faster

Book a free security timeslot

Schiphol lets you book a free timeslot for security. You reserve a guaranteed 15-minute window and get access to a dedicated queue. How it works, according to Schiphol:

  1. Book a timeslot from 3 days before your flight, for yourself and everyone travelling with you (solo, families and groups of up to 10 people). You receive a confirmation email with a QR code.
  2. Check in with your airline, then follow the yellow signs toward your gate and look for the “Reserved for timeslots” lane.
  3. Arrive within your 15-minute window. A Schiphol employee scans the QR code on your phone and guides you through to security.

Pack and dress smart

  • Liquids may only be carried in containers of max. 100 ml.
  • Empty your drink bottle before security and put it in your bag.
  • Wear fitted clothes and low shoes (shoes that come up to your ankle). You must take off your jacket, jumper, high shoes and belt.
  • In the queue: empty your pockets and put everything in your bag. Liquids and electronics such as your laptop or tablet can stay in your bag.

3. Getting to and from Schiphol Airport by train

For most people the train is the easiest option. The NS station is directly below the terminal building: take the escalator or lift down and board the train. According to Schiphol:

  • Amsterdam Centraal is 14–17 minutes away, with trains 8 times an hour. This train runs between Amsterdam CS, Sloterdijk, Lelylaan, Schiphol Airport and Hoofddorp, and from Schiphol it always leaves from track 3.
  • Direct connections, 24/7: you can travel to Schiphol from Amsterdam, Utrecht, Leiden, The Hague, Delft and Rotterdam around the clock, often without changing.
  • Night trains: two Arriva trains run from Groningen and Maastricht on Friday-to-Saturday nights. Tickets via Arriva’s glimble app, the 9292 app, or on board from the steward.
  • From train to plane: you can walk from the station to your airline’s check-in desk in less than 10 minutes.

Paying: you can buy a ticket at Schiphol or pay with your contactless debit card, credit card or mobile phone. Always check in and out on the yellow card readers at the top of the escalators and lifts in Schiphol Plaza. Read more in our public transport guide, and if your train is delayed, our guide to NS delays and refunds.

4. Bus, car and parking

Bus: the Amsterdam Express bus (line 397, or Niteliner N97 at night) runs from Schiphol into Amsterdam. The Amsterdam Travel Ticket, which covers virtually all of the city’s public transport, includes unlimited travel on these buses, according to Schiphol.

Car: Schiphol offers short-term and long-term parking, Privium Parking and a pick-up and drop-off area; see the parking pages on schiphol.nl for prices and booking.

Our tip (not from the sources): check the Schiphol website for roadworks and how busy it is before you drive, and compare parking options before your travel day.

5. Your rights if your flight is delayed or cancelled

EU air passenger rights apply to flights within the EU, to flights departing from the EU (on any airline) and to flights arriving in the EU on an EU airline. They also apply to flights to and from Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

Compensation for a delay at arrival

If you reach your final destination 3 hours or more late, you are entitled to compensation, unless the delay was caused by extraordinary circumstances:

Flight distance Delay at arrival Compensation
1,500 km or less 3 hours or more €250
More than 1,500 km within the EU, and other flights of 1,500–3,500 km 3 hours or more €400
More than 3,500 km (to/from non-EU countries) 3 to 4 hours €300
More than 3,500 km (non-EU countries) 4 hours or more €600

Cancellation

If your flight is cancelled, you can choose between a refund, re-routing at the earliest opportunity, or re-routing at a later date. You are entitled to compensation (€250, €400 or €600 depending on distance) if you were told less than 14 days before departure, unless the airline offered suitable re-routing within the EU’s time limits or the cancellation was caused by extraordinary circumstances.

What counts as extraordinary circumstances?

Examples are air traffic management decisions, political instability, adverse weather and security risks. Most technical problems and strikes by the airline’s own staff are not extraordinary circumstances.

How to claim

Always send your complaint to the airline first. If that does not help, you can contact the national enforcement authority or a European Consumer Centre for advice.

6. Meals, hotel and luggage

Care during a delay: depending on the delay and distance, the airline must give you meals and refreshments and two free phone calls or emails: from a 2-hour delay on flights of 1,500 km or less, 3 hours on longer intra-EU flights and other flights of 1,500–3,000 km, and 4 hours on all other flights. If your new departure is the next day, you are entitled to a hotel and transport. If the airline does not arrange this and you pay yourself, keep your receipts: necessary, reasonable costs should be reimbursed.

Long delay: if your flight is delayed at least 5 hours at departure, the airline must reimburse your ticket and, if you have a connecting flight, offer a return flight to the airport of departure.

Missed connection: if your flights were on one booking and you arrive more than 3 hours late, you can claim compensation. Not if you missed the connection because of delays at security or because you did not respect the boarding time.

Luggage: if checked-in luggage is lost, damaged or delayed, the airline is liable up to about €1,300. Complain in writing to the airline within 7 days, or within 21 days of receiving delayed luggage.
