1. NS fares 2027: what NS announced
In a press release of 20 October 2026, NS says that the price of a train ticket and most subscriptions will rise by an average of 4.7% on 1 January 2027. That is an average, not a flat percentage on every product: some products are unchanged, and others rise by more or less than 4.7%. NS says it will inform travellers personally about the new price of their subscription over the coming weeks, and that the new prices are published on ns.nl/tarieven.
NOS reported the same day that train tickets will be 4.7% more expensive on average next year. For the background on this year’s increase, see our guide to NS train fares 2026.

The 2027 price of individual train journeys is not listed in the sources we used; the new per-journey prices are on the NS website.
3. What does not get more expensive
According to NS, the following stay as they are:
- Railrunner, the unlimited-travel option for children, remains โฌ2.50.
- Kids Vrij: children up to and including 11 years old continue to travel for free.
- Dal Voordeel for young people aged 12 to 17 remains free. Young people get 40% off during off-peak hours and on weekends with it.
4. NS fares 2027 and off-peak travel: PrijsTijd Deals up to 80% off
The main counterweight to the price rise is cheaper off-peak travel. With PrijsTijd Deals the maximum discount goes from 60% to 80% in 2027, NS says. The deals apply to trains with plenty of free seats outside peak hours.
NOS adds a practical detail: today you must book at least a day in advance, and during 2027 these tickets also become available on the day of travel. NS board member Daan Schut links the discounts to the price rise: “That is why we offer big discounts outside the rush hour” (our translation).
5. Why NS fares 2027 go up again
NS explains that the 4.7% consists of three parts:
- the expected inflation for 2027;
- a correction for inflation in 2026;
- a previously agreed catch-up indexation (inhaalindexatie) for the inflation that was missed in 2020 to 2023.
NS says ticket price rises are bound by strict rules agreed with the national government, and that ticket revenue is needed to buy new, comfortable trains, to pay for higher costs and to keep investing in good facilities.
NOS gives the context of the catch-up part: in 2022 inflation was 10% while train tickets rose by 1.8% on average. In 2024 prices did not rise thanks to a government compensation of โฌ120 million, and this year prices rose by an average of 6.52%. NOS also reports that NS made a net profit of โฌ380 million last year, after a loss of โฌ141 million in 2024, and describes fewer passengers after the pandemic (because of working from home) and costs rising faster than income, such as wages and rolling-stock costs, as reasons for the disappointing results.
6. Reactions and open questions
Rover, the passengers’ organisation, is positive about the off-peak deals and glad NS follows its advice to offer them on the day of travel; director Daan Zieren says this mainly benefits people who travel by train only occasionally. Rover is less happy with the increase itself: “Now that NS is finally seeing passenger growth, the traveller is again punished with a big fare increase” (our translation of the quote reported by NOS). Rover also says that by using the maximum room for increases NS holds back passenger growth, and it is bothered that subscription holders cannot benefit from the high discounts.
Dal Vrij. NOS describes the summer subscription as costing โฌ49 per month and giving unlimited travel in off-peak hours and on weekends in the summer months. NS wants to talk further with the national government about the possibilities for a continuation in summer 2027; nothing is confirmed.
7. A new direct intercity from Groningen
Another change in the NS fares 2027 package is about routes: NS also announced that from the 2027 timetable intercity trains will run directly from Groningen to Rotterdam via the HSL (high-speed line). Travellers in Groningen, Assen and Zwolle can buy the HSL supplement at ticket machines on the platform. The supplement rises from โฌ3.20 to โฌ3.40, as shown in the table above.
8. How to limit the NS fares 2027 increase
Our tips (not from the sources):
- Check the personal letter or e-mail NS sends about your subscription in the coming weeks and compare the new monthly price with how often you really travel.
- If you travel mostly off-peak, compare an off-peak subscription with a PrijsTijd Deal for the days you travel, now that the maximum discount is 80%.
- Remember that off-peak discounts apply to trains with free seats, so they will not suit every journey; check the conditions before you book.
- For other travel costs, read our public transport guide and what to do when trains are late in our guide to NS delays and refunds.
