Published 3 November 2026. Times, routes and replacement services were checked on 3 November 2026 against ProRail, NS and NS International. Rail plans can change, so check the NS app or Reisplanner on the day you travel.
No trains will run to, from or through Rotterdam Centraal from Saturday 7 November 2026 at 01:00 until Monday 9 November 2026 at 05:00. ProRail is switching the whole Rotterdam area over to a new train safety system in one go. 2. Why ProRail is closing the station
The system that controls the signals and points around Rotterdam has reached the end of its technical life after about 25 years, according to ProRail. In advance, ProRail connected, tested and prepared 10,000 switches for the new system. During the weekend, the entire area moves to the new system at once, “with one red button”.
ProRail says the new system divides the Rotterdam area into separate parts, so future safety-system work should not require shutting down the whole area again.
Because the trains are stopped anyway, ProRail is doing other work the same weekend:
- repairing retaining walls along tracks 4, 6 and 7 at Rotterdam Centraal;
- replacing rails and sleepers on tracks 16 and 19;
- renewing the ballast (the stone bed under the track) near Moordrecht, on the Rotterdam–Gouda line;
- fully renewing the track at Capelle Schollevaar station.
3. Replacement buses and metro
NS is running replacement transport, and a valid NS ticket can be used on it. The exception: on the metro between Rotterdam Centraal and Rodenrijs, the normal RET fare applies.
| Type | Route |
|---|---|
| Metro A, B, C | Schiedam Centrum – Rotterdam Alexander |
| Metro D, E | Rotterdam Centraal – Slinge |
| Bus | Metro station Rodenrijs – Zoetermeer Lansingerland |

NS warns that the replacement transport may be busy and advises allowing extra travel time. It does not give a fixed number of extra minutes, so check your own journey in the planner.
4. Eurostar and trains to Belgium
NS International lists these changes for the weekend:
- Eurostar Amsterdam – London (trains 9100–9199), Saturday 7 November 05:00 to Sunday 8 November 23:59: no stop at Rotterdam Centraal. NS International advises boarding at Amsterdam Centraal instead.
- Eurostar Amsterdam – Brussels – Paris (trains 9300–9399 and 9900–9919), Saturday 7 November 06:00 to Sunday 8 November 22:00: the trains run via Utrecht Centraal and skip Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam Centraal.
- Eurocity Direct (9500–9599), Saturday 7 November 04:00 to Monday 9 November 02:00: no service between Lelystad Centrum and Breda. It runs only between Breda, Antwerpen Centraal and Brussel Zuid.
- Eurocity (9200–9299), same period: no service between Rotterdam Centraal and Roosendaal. It runs only between Roosendaal and Brussel Zuid and skips Noorderkempen.
If you have an international ticket that starts or ends in Rotterdam, check the NS International or Eurostar travel updates before the weekend.
5. How to plan your weekend trip
- Plan on the day. Use the NS app or the NS Journey Planner; NS advises checking your journey there before you leave.
- Leave early. Buses and metros will be busier than normal, and changes take longer than a direct train.
- Going to Schiphol or Breda by HSL? There are no HSL trains from Rotterdam Centraal that weekend, so check the planner for a route via another line.
- Using the metro to Rodenrijs? That section is not covered by your NS ticket; you pay the normal RET fare for it.

6. Next: Rotterdam Zuid–Barendrecht, 29 November to 7 December
The job is not completely finished after this weekend. ProRail will do the final safety-system work in IJsselmonde from 29 November to 7 December 2026. During that period no trains run between Rotterdam Zuid and Barendrecht, and NS will run replacement buses, according to ProRail.
7. FAQ
When exactly are there no trains at Rotterdam Centraal?
From Saturday 7 November 2026 at 01:00 until Monday 9 November 2026 at 05:00, according to ProRail.
Can I use my NS ticket on the replacement buses and metro?
Yes. NS says a valid NS ticket is accepted on the replacement transport, except on the metro between Rotterdam Centraal and Rodenrijs, where you pay the RET fare.
Does the Eurostar to London stop in Rotterdam that weekend?
No. Eurostar trains 9100–9199 do not stop at Rotterdam Centraal from Saturday 7 November 05:00 to Sunday 8 November 23:59. NS International advises boarding in Amsterdam Centraal.
Why is the whole station closed and not just a few tracks?
ProRail is replacing the system that controls all signals and points around Rotterdam and switches everything over at once. The new system is split into parts, so future work of this kind should not need a full closure.
Are there more closures around Rotterdam this year?
Yes. From 29 November to 7 December 2026 there are no trains between Rotterdam Zuid and Barendrecht, with NS replacement buses.
