THE HAGUE – October 27, 2026 | The Dutch Daily
The number of millionaires in the Netherlands has risen again. According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), 547,100 households had a wealth of at least €1 million on 1 January 2025, which is 81,000 more than a year earlier. CBS says the increase is mainly due to higher house prices. The figures are provisional and describe households, not individual people.
1. The key figures
| Measure | CBS figure |
|---|---|
| Millionaire households, 1 January 2025 (provisional) | 547,100 |
| Millionaire households, 1 January 2024 | 466,000 |
| Increase in one year | 81,000 (about 17%, our calculation from the CBS figures) |
| Share of all Dutch households | 6.6% |
| Typical (midpoint) wealth, millionaire households | €1.5 million |
| Typical (midpoint) wealth, other households | €131,000 |
Source: CBS, 27 October 2026 (StatLine tables 83834NED and 86379NED, as named by CBS).
Most millionaire households are at the lower end of that range. CBS says about two-thirds have between €1 million and €2 million, a quarter between €2 million and €5 million, and 3% have €10 million or more.
2. What counts as a millionaire household
CBS counts a household as a millionaire household when its wealth is at least €1 million. The value of the owner-occupied home counts, and so does mortgage debt, which is subtracted. That is why house prices matter so much: a household can reach €1 million largely because its home has gained value. The unit is the household, so a couple living together counts once.
3. Who they are: age and assets
The head of a millionaire household is on average 61 years old, which CBS says is nine years older than the head of a household that is not a millionaire. Only 2.7% of millionaire households are headed by someone under 35, compared with 21.2% of other households. Based on CBS’s age groups, about 69% of millionaire households are headed by someone aged 55 or older, against about 46% of other households.
The mix of assets is also very different:
| Asset type | Millionaire households | Other households |
|---|---|---|
| Business interests and business assets | 39% (35.3% + 4.1%) | 3.0% |
| Owner-occupied home | 29.0% | 78.7% |
| Other real estate | 10.8% | 2.6% |
| Savings | 8.9% | 13.1% |
| Securities | 8.5% | 1.9% |
| Other | 3.4% | 0.8% |

For most Dutch households the home is by far the largest asset. For millionaires it is business ownership. Among millionaire households headed by someone under 35, substantial shareholdings (aanmerkelijk belang) alone make up 48.1% of assets, against 20.3% for those headed by someone aged 75 and older.
4. Where they live
By province, the highest shares are in Noord-Holland (8%) and Utrecht (9%). Groningen, Flevoland, Limburg and Fryslân are all below 5%. The municipalities show a far bigger gap:
| Highest share of millionaire households | Share | Lowest share | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bloemendaal | 37.7% | Kerkrade | 1.1% |
| Laren | 37.4% | Brunssum | 1.7% |
| Rozendaal | 32.3% | Heerlen | 1.7% |
| Blaricum | 28.4% | Pekela | 1.8% |
| Heemstede | 27.5% | ||
| Wassenaar | 25.6% |

|---|---|
| 2011 | 170.2 |
| 2015 | 179.5 |
| 2020 | 285.2 |
| 2021 | 316.2 |
| 2022 | 409.5 |
| 2023 | 434.7 |

6. What the figures do not tell you
- It is wealth, not income. A household with €1 million in assets does not necessarily have a high income, particularly if most of the wealth is a home.
- It is a household count. CBS does not give the number of individual millionaires.
- The reference date is 1 January 2025. The figures were published in October 2026, and they are provisional.
- Taxes are not part of the CBS release. For how savings and investments are taxed, see our guides on box 3 and on the box 3 wealth tax. For the housing side, see our report on Dutch house prices in September 2026.
